堪萨斯大学视觉艺术系（Department of Visual Art）受美国艺术与设计学校协会（NASAD）认证，开设的大部分课程以工作室艺术为主，实践为基础。班级规模约15-20名学生。视觉艺术系包括视觉艺术教育（Visual Art Education）、陶瓷艺术（Ceramics）、金属与珠宝设计（Metalsmithing/ Jewelry）、纺织与纤维艺术（Textiles/ Fibers）、绘画艺术（Drawing/ Painting）、版画艺术（Printmaking）、雕塑艺术（Sculpture）和扩展媒体（Expanded Media）。*(1)

堪萨斯大学视觉艺术系在1869年首次开设工作室艺术课程，随后在1885年开设了艺术系（绘画与艺术教育课程），同年与音乐系合并后于1894年更名为美术学院。1915年，艺术系有囊括了绘画（Drawing and Painting）、设计（Design）和陶器（Pottery）。设计系开创于1921年，课程包括海报设计、纺织品设计、金属工艺品设计、书本装订、陶瓷艺术和编织艺术。1929年授予BFA学位，所含项目有设计、公共艺术系、绘画艺术等，共需学分120个。1941年又新加入了工业设计，1946年加入了室内设计项目，1948年新设项目包括银制品与珠宝设计、艺术史和MFA学位项目。直到1962年，艺术史和艺术系才统一由美术学院管理。*(2)
