What Is a Master of Education?

A master of education degree, or EdM, is an advanced master’s degree program focused on both pedagogical theory and strengthening subject expertise. For example, our EdM in English & Language Arts students will advance their skills in English literature while learning about systemic issues facing both students and educators, developing the tools for driving social change.

Many students who pursue an EdM degree are working professionals in the field. EdM programs equip students with the skills needed to design curricula and teach effectively. Beyond these skills, graduates with a master of education degree from BU Wheelock are change makers, critical thinkers, and leaders who put their expertise to use on the job.

How Long Is a Master of Education Program?

The length of an EdM program will vary based on how many credits are needed to graduate. Some programs can be completed in as little as one academic year, while others require two academic years to complete.
