Requirements

Prior to matriculation at GSDM, enrolling four-year DMD students must have earned, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year U.S. or Canadian college or university, and must complete successfully any degree program in which they were enrolled during the application process.

In addition, enrolling students must have completed successfully the following prerequisite courses:

  • Biology with lab – 3 courses or 12-13 credit hours
  • General chemistry with lab – 2 courses or 8-10 credit hours
  • Organic chemistry with lab – 2 courses or 8-10 credit hours
  • Physics with lab – 2 courses or 8-10 credit hours
  • Biochemistry – 1 course or 3-4 credit hours
  • Two additional upper-level courses in biology, biochemistry, general chemistry, organic chemistry, or physics, totaling at least six credit hours

All prerequisite courses must be completed at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university and must total a minimum of 45 semester credit hours. Of these 45 credit hours, at least 30 – and at least one course each in biology, biochemistry, chemistry (general or organic), and physics – must be earned at a four-year college or university.

Community college credits may be applied toward a prerequisite as long as the applicant also completes at least one 200/2000/sophomore-level or higher course in the relevant discipline at a four-year college or university. For example, a candidate who took an introductory biology class at a community college may count that as one of the three required biology courses as long as that candidate also completed a 200-level or higher course in biology at a four-year institution.

Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and test-exemption credits are not accepted toward prerequisites.

Applicants who completed their bachelor’s degree more than two years before expected dental school attendance are advised to pursue academic activities, research, or employment in the oral health field to maintain and strengthen preparation for a dental school curriculum.
