Opal Network for public transport

The NSW public transport network used for trains and buses is called Opal. Fare payment is electronically managed through a tap on, tap off system.

Most international students will need to buy an adult Opal card or pay with a regular VISA debit card.

Private transport

In Newcastle, Central Coast and Sydney most private and ride share services are common and available. Within all of these cities you can use Uber, Didi and taxi services.

If you have an international driver’s licence you can drive in NSW. You must carry a bilingual copy of your licence or a certified translation of your licence when you drive. You can also visit Service NSW to convert to an Australian driver’s licence.

If you purchase a car to drive, either privately or at a car dealer, always check the vehicle’s registration first. It is best to also pay for an online Vehicle History Check before you agree to purchase a car. This will tell you if the car is safe and legal to drive, and if the car has been in any major accidents before.

You will have to pay vehicle registration and purchase compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance as a car owner in NSW.
