English proficiency requirements

As an international student, you are required to meet the university's English proficiency requirements for Undergraduate Admissions.

TOEFL iBT and IELTS

  • Minimum scores of 79-80 TOEFL iBT and IELTS 6.5 are required for admission to Wayne State.

MET

WSU also accepts exam scores from the 4 skill Michigan English Test (MET). You must score a minimum of 64 on the MET.

Duolingo

WSU also accepts exam scores from the Duolingo English test. You must score a minimum of 110 on the Duolingo test. The Duolingo test is available online anytime, anywhere.

English proficiency exemptions

If your native language is not English but you have been instructed in the English language, you are not necessarily exempt from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of Written English (TWE) and the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) requirements.

If you meet at least one of the following requirements, you are exempt from TOEFL/TWE/OPI:

  • Your native language is English.

  • You have completed all secondary or postsecondary education in the United States, Canada or other another English-speaking country. The following countries are also exempt from taking the TOEFL:

    • Australia
    • Barbados
    • Bermuda
    • Bahamas
    • Belize
    • Canada (with the exception of Nunavut and Quebec)
    • Cayman Islands
    • Dominica
    • Ghana

  • You are an international student or student whose education was completed outside of the United States in a non-English speaking country, regardless of visa status, who has completed an associate of arts or associate of science degree (college parallel degree) from a U.S. institution.

  • You have completed acceptable transfer credits from a U.S. institution equivalent to Wayne State's basic composition and intermediate composition requirements with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
