SILab is looking for SILab Advisors!

We are always accepting applications though we may not always have openings. If you are an ENG student who has been trained at SILab and you are interested, submit an application and the SILab Manager will keep the application on file for when we do have openings. Generally it is best to apply at the start of the semester once you have your schedule set.

For Spring 2024, we have 1 opening and are looking for availability weekday evenings.

  1. Why are you applying for this position?
  2. Indicate each semester you are available to work: 2024 Spring, 2024 Summer, or 2024 Fall.
  3. What is your experience with SILab?
  4. Provide a brief paragraph detailing your experience with machine shops, hand tools, and hands-on projects. (Does not have to be from projects done in SILab.)
  5. Your course schedule for the 2024 Spring semester as an image attachment in the email. Add in any times you cannot work because of other commitments, the open times in the schedule are meant to indicate a potential willingness to work those times.
  6. From the times described above, what are specific times you want to work each week? How many hours do you want to work each week? How flexible are you in terms of the number of hours and times?
  7. Please include your BU ID #, full name, school, program, and expected graduation month and year.
  8. Do you have a work-study award? (This position does not require you to have a work-study award).
  9. How did you hear about the job? Were you referred by a SILab Advisor? If so, who? (You do not have to be referred to apply.)
  10. Do you have or are you seeking a second job? Is this a job where you do or will receive a paycheck/stipend from BU?

Additional Information

Interviews for Spring 2024 will be held in late January or early February.

This is an on-campus job for 6-12 hours a week. Pay is $16/hr. You are not allowed to do personal business while on shift.

SILab Advisor Responsibilities: Validating that students have been safety trained at SILab within the past year, traveling around SILab supervising safety and overall activities, providing advice to students as needed, and ensuring SILab is clean and organized at all times. You will need to make sure all users feel welcomed, will need to do safety training for groups or individuals as requested, and will also be assigned various tasks in the space by the SILab Manager. At the end of your shift you will be asked to write a brief report of SILab activity. You will need to respond in a reasonable time to all SILab Manager inquiries, even when off shift. All SILab Advisors are required to attend a mandatory weekly staff meeting, currently Friday from 10 to 11 am.

SILab hours: Mon-Thurs, noon to 10pm and Fri, Sat, Sun, noon to 6pm. (SILab is only open when classes are in session.)

Qualifications: You must be safety trained at SILab, have excellent communication skills, and be able to respond quickly and clearly to enforce all safety requirements. You must be a College of Engineering student at Boston University. Previous experience with machine tools and do-it-yourself projects is preferred, regular work in SILab and pictures of projects is also helpful.

No student can work more than 20 hours for ALL jobs at Boston University when classes are in session. No student can work for more than 40 hours a week when classes are not in session. (A paycheck issued by Boston University indicates it is a Boston University job.).

International students need ISSO paperwork to begin work.

(If you are a Graduate Teaching Fellow [GTF], Research Assistant [RA], or Dean’s Fellow [DF or DRF], you must have permission from your supervisor to work, since the GTF, RA, and DF or DRF [funded] positions are considered 20 hours a week, assuming you receive a stipend and tuition. International students who are in GTF, RA and DF or DRF positions are not eligible to work, since you cannot work more than 20 hours a week. These rules do not apply in the summer or during semester breaks.)
