Admission to the Psychology Graduate Program
The Psychology Graduate Program admits students for the fall semester only. The application window to join the Fall 2024 cohort has closed as of December 1, 2023, and applications to join next year's cohort will open September 2024.
Emory Psychology does not offer a terminal master's degree.
The Psychology Department selects applicants based on their academic research experiences, their scholarly record, and the fit between the applicant's research interests and goals, and the interests and expertise of faculty who are admitting students in a given year.
Psychology is committed to strong mentoring relationships between faculty and graduate students. Students are typically admitted into the graduate program as a member of a specific professor's research group. Graduate Students are able to change their mentor if their goals change and if a different mentor is willing to adopt the mentee.
Psychology Application Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the General Admission Requirements as laid out by the Emory University Laney Graduate School as well as the following:
PLEASE NOTE: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General will not be required for the 2024 admission cycle.
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree or Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree
- Transcripts and other evidence of academic work from all previous graduate and undergraduate institutions
- Selection of Concentration and Faculty Mentors and a rank-order of up to three affiliated faculty mentors who are considering applications. Please click on the names of each faculty member to learn about their work and what they can offer to potential mentees. NOTE: If you choose Clinical Science as a secondary concentration, you will not be eligible to pursue the clinical training program and furthermore, will not be license-eligible.
- Statement of Purpose that outlines in 750 - 1,500 words your reasons for undertaking doctoral study in psychology, your goals, why you have matched yourself to a particular concentration and potential faculty member(s), and a description of relevant research experience.
- Writing Sample (optional)
- Résumé / C.V.
- Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's academic research performance. Please confirm all three of your recommenders' email addresses.
- Application Fee of $75 (fee waivers may be available.)
- TOEFL or IELTS Scores must be submitted for applicants who are non-native English speakers. Our institution code is 5187 (no department code is needed). This requirement is waived if the applicant will receive a BS, BA, or MS degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction. See below for more information.

English Language Requirement If your native language is not English, you must show evidence of command of the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Testing System (IELTS). If you need to submit scores, our institution code is 5187 (no department code is needed). Can the TOEFL or IELTS requirement be waived? The TOEFL exam is waived if the applicant will receive a BS, BA or MS degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction.
