We offer a wide range of programs that will help develop your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Most Deakin University English Language Institute courses run for five weeks and are offered at our Melbourne Burwood Campus. We offer nine intakes throughout the year. Selected courses are also offered online.

English for Academic Purposes

Location: Melbourne Burwood, online  
Duration: 5-20 weeks

English for Academic Purposes will help you meet the English language requirements of Deakin undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. You will learn report writing, essay writing and research skills, and develop your speaking and communication skills.

Introductory Academic Program

Location: Melbourne Burwood
Duration: 5 weeks

This is a high-level program for students with IELTS of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) who have met university admission requirements and want to succeed in their studies. You will develop the writing, reading, listening and speaking skills needed to be successful at Deakin.

IELTS Preparation

Location: Melbourne Burwood, online  
Duration: 5 weeks

This course will help you achieve success in the International English Language Test (IELTS) examination. Become familiar with the examination format and improve listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. To enrol, you must have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent.

English for Teaching

Location: Melbourne Burwood, online  
Duration: 5 weeks

This is an advanced intensive program that will prepare you for entry into Deakin’s Bachelor of Education or postgraduate teaching degrees, including the Master of Teaching. To enrol, you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 or have completed the EAP 4 program with a score of 70%.

English for Commerce 

Location: Melbourne Burwood
Duration: 5 weeks

The English for Commerce program is for students wishing to develop their English skills for accounting, law, finance and marketing. To enrol, you will need to complete EAP 2 with a score of 60% or equivalent or have completed the required placement test score.

General English

Location: Melbourne Burwood
Duration: 5-45 weeks

General English Elementary (GE 1) is a 10-week program. You can exit after five weeks with an overall score of 55% plus 17 in Writing. GE 2 and above are five weeks long per level. You will learn English for everyday situations.

Independent Learning Centre

The resource room, conversation room and computer lab are dedicated spaces for English language students. We have teachers in each of these areas to help you with your work. Centre facilities include:

  • online resources to develop language skills
  • DVDs to improve listening and comprehension skills
  • resources for pronunciation and listening comprehension skills
  • daily newspapers, magazines and books.

Entry requirements and pathways

Acceptance into your English language course is subject to your English level, which is assessed on arrival. You will undertake 20 hours of face-to-face tuition per week, as well as five hours a week of supervised learning in our Independent Learning Centre. Successful completion of English for Academic Purposes pathway programs can provide you with English entry into Deakin University and Deakin College.
