How to apply

To apply to the Chemistry Graduate Program, you will need to create an account to begin the application process. Recommendation letters need to include a letter of recommendation form (this file must be downloaded and then completed). Submission of program-specific materials (e.g., Supplemental Data Form, recommendation letters, personal statement, etc.) are completed online through the Admissions Profile in My UI. Please allow up to 24 hours for your profile to become active after you create your account.

Applications are invited from candidates that intend to pursue a PhD degree. In order to receive full consideration, application materials should be received by the Department of Chemistry by Feb. 15 for fall admission. Admission is competitive, and applicants that receive offers for fall admission must notify the department of their decision by April 15.

Requirements for admission

Applicants for fall semester whose application materials are received by Jan. 1 have the best chance to be admitted and receive financial aid. All applicants must submit:

• Academic transcripts
• Letters of recommendation from three persons familiar with their past academic work
• A statement of purpose
• One or more samples of original writing (one of which should be in Chemistry) that show their ability to pursue graduate work in Chemistry (an honors thesis, term paper, seminar paper, or other course papers)
• International students must also submit TOEFL, or IELTS or Duolingo, scores according to the English Proficiency Requirements of the Graduate College

The $60 application fee ($100 for international students) is payable by Visa, Mastercard, or Discover.

Minimum requirements for admission

• A U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
• If applicable, a minimum TOEFL score of 81 on the Internet-based test (iBT) or 550 on the paper-based test (PBT); or an IELTS score of 7.0 with no section score lower than 6.0.
