The English Department will begin reviewing completed MA applications on January 1, 2024 and will continue to accept them until the March 15, 2024 deadline.
PhD applications are due December 15th, 2023

Please visit the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences to apply online.

Students are no longer required to submit GRE scores as part of their applications to the MA or the PhD programs in English and American literature. Applicants still have the option of submitting results of the General GRE Test, however, if they so choose. The ETS Institution Code for the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is 3087.

In addition to the standard Graduate School admissions forms, all applicants to the MA and PhD programs should submit a scholarly writing sample of approximately 15-25 pages displaying their writing, analytic, and research skills, preferably (but not necessarily) in their professed area of interest. All applicants must also submit a 2-3 page personal statement. This statement should discuss the applicant’s scholarly interests and goals, as well as relevant projects and training. It may also address the applicant’s potential to contribute to a community that values diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
