School of Rural Medicine Higher Degree Research

The School of Rural Medicine has a strong history of supervising and supporting Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students. With a network of both national and international collaborators in medicine and associated health-related fields of research, the School also has an active list of adjunct clinical and research appointments.

The school offers HDR degrees at both the Masters and PhD level. These awards offer many opportunities and topics for postgraduate research studies across all aspects of medicine, with areas of specialty in rurality, medical education, individual health (including chronic and acute conditions), public health, health service management, intellectual disability, ageing, end-of-life and person-centred care.

The Tablelands Clinical School, based on the grounds of Armidale Rural Referral Hospital, provides additional opportunities for advanced training in practice and research in medicine, with a focus on providing support to rural and regional communities.

Why should I do a Higher Degree at the School of Rural Medicine?

PhD and Masters students in the School of Rural Medicine join a community of over 90 HDR students conducting a broad range of projects across the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

As an HDR student you will play a role central in enhancing UNE’s reputation for research excellence.  The School has a strong culture of engagement, in which HDR students regularly co-author publications and explore external funding opportunities with their supervisors.

Internal funding is provided to support research projects, and also conference travel.  Opportunities for supplementary funding though teaching and research assistantships are also available.
