Eligibility

Master's program

QI would like to enroll UTIPE Master's program. What is the application eligiblity for UTIPE Master's program?

A From the student admission for 2025 enrollments, the Department of Economics is to undertake a further reform by integrating UTIPE with the General Master's program. The major changes are announced here. For further details, please refer to the application guidelines to be released in late April 2024.

Doctoral program

QI graduated from one of European universities with a MSc in Economics. Is it possible for me to enter directly into the Doctoral program without obtaining a master's degree from University of Tokyo first?

A The admission Policy for UTIPE Doctoral Program has changed from 2023 April enrollment. Applicants who are eligible to apply for the UTIPE Doctoral program are limited to those who are expected to complete UTIPE Master's program at Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo and admitted to candidacy for the program.

ANo. We do not accept research students.

Visa

QWhat visa status should I have in order to enroll UTIPE program?

AInternational students should have an appropriate status of residence that will allow admission to our graduate school, as stipulated in the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (Cabinet Order No. 319 of 1951) to enroll at UTIPE program. If you do not have a status of residence at the time of enrollment procedures, you will not be admitted to UTokyo. In priciple, to study and research at UTokyo, student visa "Student (ryugaku)" is needed. Please refer to the visa page and follow the instructions.

QI have "Long Term Residence Visa status." In order to enroll UTIPE program, should I change from the status to student visa?

AThere are two types of visa status in Japan; one is issued based on the activity in which you engage and the other is issued based on your status or position. If your visa status is issued based on the activity, you should have student visa in priciple. "Long Term Resident," "Spouse or Child of Japanese National," "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" and "Permanent Resident" are issued based on your status or position. If your visa status is issued based on the status or position, please consult us immediately after obtaining an admission.
