Application fee waivers

In an effort to reduce financial barriers to attending graduate school, the Kenneth P. Dietrich Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers application fee waivers. Statement of Purpose

State your reasons for wanting to undertake graduate study in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh.

Submit your statement of purpose electronically, in the additional information section of the online admissions application.

Official Transcripts of all Undergraduate and Graduate Work

Submit transcripts electronically (instructions are included with the online application).

Three Letters of Recommendation

Referees shouldsubmit their recommendations electronically (instructions are included with the online application).

Writing Sample

A sample of your philosophical writing (an essay of about 20 or 25 pages) is required. Papers submitted will not be returned. Your name should be clearly indicated on the first page.

Application Fee

International Applicants should also include the following:

Official TOEFL or IELTS or Duolingo scores
(Non-native English speakers)

Submit these scores to the department.

The required minimum TOEFL score is 90 (with at least a score of 22 in all of the four sections of speaking, listening, reading and writing). The required minimum IELTS score is 7.0 (with at least 6.5 in each of its four sections). The required minimum Duolingo score is 110.

Optional Materials

GRE scores

Applicants are permitted, but not required, to submit GRE scores. When submitted, GRE scores are taken into account in the admissions process. But applicants will not be penalized if they choose not to submit them.
