What to expect

Build a unique set of versatile skills for today's complex challenges, with our science and mathematics double degree.

Beginning from your first semester, you'll engage in collaborative learning experiences within QUT's innovative environments, tackling real-world problems through diverse scientific, mathematical, and statistical perspectives. You'll gain hands-on experience and learn to effectively analyse and present scientific data, from fieldwork to laboratory experiments.

Customise your degree by selecting a major in areas like biology, chemistry, statistics, or applied mathematics, enhancing both your quantitative analysis skills and expertise in a scientific discipline. Whether you aspire to enter the workforce or pursue further study, this program prepares you with a solid foundation and practical skills for success.

In this double degree, you'll complete coursework from each degree with additional QUT You units. The Bachelor of Science component encompasses core units, Mathematics Core Unit Options, and a major in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Climate Science, Earth Science, Environmental Science, and Physics.

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Mathematics program includes core units and a major in areas such as Applied and Computational Mathematics, Operations Research, or Statistics.

Careers and outcomes

Careers and outcomes

Graduates find work in a diverse range of exciting fields. Some examples include:

  • natural resources: measuring fish populations and predicting sustainable fishing limits
  • agriculture: from climate modelling to the interaction between crop yields and prices, harvest schedules and environmental impacts
  • genetics: including gene sequencing and quantitative genetics
  • chemistry and biochemistry: operations research and statistical techniques to improve workflow processes of chemical laboratories. Scientific computation and visualisation related to research areas such as drug design using combinatorial chemistry
  • infection and disease control: using statistics and mathematical modelling
  • bioinformatics: analysing and modelling data arising in molecular biology, genome sequencing and gene networks
  • physical measuring and imaging techniques: measuring and modelling using applied and computational mathematics.

Professional recognition

On graduation students may also be eligible for membership in the Australian Mathematical Society (AMS), ANZIAM (Australia and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics, a division of AMS), the Australian Society for Operations Research Inc. (ASOR) and the Statistical Society of Australia.
