Many of the department's dynamic faculty are current or rising stars in their respective fields. Faculty regularly publish their work in the top journals in economics, often with current and former graduate students as co-authors.
A vibrant, collaborative community
Collaboration is the key to success, especially in the first few years of graduate school. At Notre Dame, graduate students have worked intentionally to build an inclusive and dynamic community.
As a first-year student, you will have dedicated study spaces to work together, and student offices are located in the department so that all students can easily collaborate with professors and other students. The graduate student leadership committee hosts a student-oriented workshop on Fridays, where you can present your own research to receive feedback from peers before presenting to professors.
You can also relax and enjoy social activities with the department community. Whether it's tailgating before football games, sampling the local restaurant scene, or playing video games after exams, you get to know others to support your academic and personal growth better.

"Working with Lakshmi has been an amazing opportunity. I initially interviewed with her when I applied to the PhD program at Notre Dame. I reached out to her during the second semester of my first year to ask if she was looking for a research assistant for the upcoming academic year. We had a meeting where we discussed the projects she was working on. Following the meeting, she sent me some more information and drafts of the paper. She asked me which one I would be most interested in and we began working on the project following the comprehensive exams. Working with Lakshmi has taught me a lot already and I have gotten to dive into historical documents to find data which I had not done before!"
